Department of Public Enterprises Youth Programmes

The aim of the Department of Public Enterprises is to provide effective shareholder management of state owned enterprises that report to the department, and support and promote economic efficiency and competitiveness for a better life for all South Africans.

The state owned enterprises are strategic instruments of industrial policy and core players in the New Growth Path. The department aims to provide decisive strategic direction to the state owned enterprises so that their businesses are aligned with the national growth strategies arising out of the New Growth Path. It will do this by ensuring that their planning and performance, and investments and activities, are in line with Government’s medium term strategic framework and the Minister’s service delivery agreement.

Youth Development Programmes organised by DPE

  • Graduate Development Programme
  • Internship Programme
  • Busary Programme
     

Graduate Development Programme:
This programme targets full time students who are still pursuing their studies at universities. The scholarship is for studies at Honours or Masters Level in areas covering scarce and critical skills relevant to the Department of Public Enterprises. At the end of the their full time studies, these students are offered a two-year employment contracts as a way of paying back the department. After the two years of serve-back, some of these graduates are absorbed, depending on the need and availability of vacant posts.

Requirements:

  • Third year (or Honours) full time students in Accounting, Economics, Corporate Law, Engineering and Transport Logistics.
  • Preparedness to serve back at the Department for a period of two years after completing studies.

Internship Programme:

The Department participates in this programme and has been able to provide additional training and development that rendered many young people employable. Each intern is offered a twelve month contract that runs concurrent to the financial year. 

Requirements:

  • National Diploma/Degrees
  • Between 18-35 years of age
  • Never employed in that area (sector) in public service before.

Busary Programme:

The Department runs a bursary programme that also caters for young employees in DPE. The programme is for internal employees only and is not open to outside people. It accommodates people studying towards National Certificates, National Diplomas and Degrees.

Requirements:

  • Restricted to permanent and fixed contract employees.
  • Employees expected to serve back.
  • Focus being on formal academic programmes that are relevant to the core business of DPE
  • Signing of contracts to serve-back the Department in lieu of bursary funding received.
