Broadband Infraco is a State Owned Enterprise (SOE) whose function is to design, engineer, build and operate a wholesale long distance telecommunications Carrier of Carriers business that offers network services to the South African wholesale ICT market consisting of licensed operators and Internet Service providers as well as projects of National Importance.

Broadband Infraco Youth Development Programmes:

Job Creation: 

This is a program aimed at learners that are in the Senior Secondary level. Students have the opportunity to spend a day with a specialist in the area of study or work that they are interested in.

Internship Programme: 

This program is aimed at graduates that have recently completed their tertiary studies and aims to build skills that can be made available to meet the current and future business needs of Broadband Infraco. The program is designed to facilitate and guide the development of potential employees to have a broad appreciation (not necessarily deep knowledge) of all the main components of designing, building and operating a wholesale telecommunications network like Broadband Infraco’s.

Opportunities exist in the following areas:

  • Network System Engineers: In this area, one will provide high level support for the Broadband Infraco network
  • Network Operators: One would provide surveillance and first line fault management of the network. This area is operated 24hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.
  • Engineers: Interns in this area provide high level support for the Broadband Infraco Operational Support systems.
  • Network Maintenance Technicians: Corrective and preventative maintenance of the Broadband Infraco network. 
How it works?

The Internship program extends for 24 months during which they exposed to as many production and operational departments within Broadband Infraco as possible. Candidates will generally spend 3 to 6 months in various areas in order to complete the necessary understanding of what happens in any department, however not more than 12 months within the same area while under development.

Candidates will be assigned to mentors who will develop, assign and assess the candidates against predetermined assignments with very specific learning objectives. 


Candidates wanting to make a career in Telecommunications or in the general Information and Communications Technology (ICT) environment would require the following:

  • Knowledge:
    • Prerequisite studies must include a minimum of a Diploma or Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering (Light Current) with a focus on Telecommunications.
    • Computer literacy is mandatory as is reasonable competence with applications like Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Skills
  • Having a drivers licence
  • Communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Problem solving
  • Analytical
  • An appreciation of business principles
  • Mast and tower climbing (necessary for the Network Maintenance programme)
  • Attitudes
    • Candidates must be willing to learn and undertake some field work which may include local travel
    • Teamwork is important
    • Taking ‘ownership’ for deliverables
    • Ethical and diligent
    • A commitment to excellence, accuracy and quality conscious
    • Good time keeping
    • Self motivated
    • Respect for cultural diversity
Membership of relevant Voluntarily Associations like the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) and registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) while not a prerequisite will be advantageous and is highly recommended.
