Eskom

Generation

This division is responsible for the generation of electricity. Eskom’s 24 power plants are grouped into clusters and these are fully operational.

Eskom is the critical factor in our electricity supply and will remain so for a long time to come even though we are in the process of introducing other suppliers into the system.

The Government Policy regarding the generation of electricity is that Eskom will provide 70 percent of the required new generation capacity while the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) will provide 30 percent.

Securing supply through diversity remains a key objective in the energy sector. Eskom have put forward proposals recently for new power plant that include OCGTs, CCGTs, coal fired plant, pumped storage plant and nuclear plant (both conventional pressurised water reactor (PWR) technology and PBMR).

Eskom has a renewable energy strategy that supports the White Paper on Renewable Energy that has a target of 10% of the MW of energy available by 2010 to come from renewable sources. Eskom is committed to investigating and evaluating the options for the diversification of the energy mix over time.
