(1) With reference to a certain contract (name furnished) for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the building of the Nuclear 1 power station which expired in October 2011, what (a) was the budget, (b) were the eventual costs and (c) were the initial estimated time frames for the project;

(2)With reference to a certain contract (name furnished) for the EIA for the building of the Nuclear 1 power station which was renewed in May 2012, what (a) was the budget, (b) was the scope and (c) were the initial estimated time frames for the project? CW473E
Reply:
(1)(a-b) According to Eskom, they are not in a position to disclose the budget and costs for the Nuclear-1 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as such disclosure will prejudice the commercial negotiations for the subsequent EIAs.

(c) The original contract was for the period October 2006 to April 2008.

(2) The extension of the scope of the contract impacted on the duration of the project.  In 2011 Eskom decided that rather than continuing to extend the scope and duration of the original contract, to close off the contract and sign a new contract for the remainder of the envisaged scope of work.
(a) Eskom is not in a position to disclose the budget and costs for the Nuclear-1 EIA as such disclosure will prejudice the commercial negotiations for the subsequent EIAs.
(b) The scope of the new contract includes a reassessment of access routes, additional meetings with various Authorities, additional focus group meetings between certain specialists and public interest groups, additional engagements with the public, and legal and process reviews.

(c) The duration of the new contract is between April 2012 to March 2013.
