We are pleased to announce the appointment of the new Minister of Public Enterprises, Ms Lynne Brown effective from 26 May 2014.
Ms Brown obtained a certificate in Adult and Continuing Education from the University of the Western Cape and did post-apartheid studies abroad and has a certificate in Gender Development Planning Methodology from the University College in London.
Ms Brown is a founding member of the United Women's Organisation formed in 1979 and she became a member of the ANC in the 1980's. She has been a member of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) and Chairperson of the NEC’s Legislature and Governance Sub-committee.She was an Executive member of the Federation of South African Women and General Secretary of the ANC Women's League in the Western Cape. She started the Women's College in the early 90's for women in governance and she became a member of the Mitchell's Plain Youth Congress and a member of the United Democratic Front. She also served as Treasurer of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape.
Ms Brown taught in Beaufort-West, Salt River and Mitchells Plain. She also taught what was then called 'night school' to staff at Groote Schuur Hospital and strongly supports Adult Education. Ms Brown was a Patron of the Wheat Trust. She served as a Premier of the Western Cape Province from 25 July 2008 until May 2009. Prior to her appointment as a Premier, she was MEC for Finance and Tourism in the Western Cape.
During her time in the Western Cape Legislature she also served as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Community Services, Health and Welfare and on Finance and Public Accounts. She was also the ANC Chief Whip and Deputy Speaker, and later Speaker of Western Cape Provincial Parliament and Leader of Government Business on the Western Cape.
