Mr Thuto Shomang is currently the Acting Director-General for the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE).
He was seconded from MTN to the Department until April 2019. He was the Executive: Group Treasury for MTN where he oversees all treasury functions and ensures that there is sufficient liquidity to meet the ongoing requirements of the Group's holding- and operating companies.
He has a distinguished 14 year history at the National Treasury where his last position was that of DDG and Head of the Asset and Liability Management Division. At the Treasury he was responsible for cash management, debt management, the financing of government's borrowing requirements and the financial oversight of state-owned entities.
Until he left the Treasury in May 2014, he advised the Minister of Finance on financial and capital markets, the finances of state-owned entities and their impact on the broader economy, formulating government's borrowing- and funding strategy, the issuance of domestic currency denominated bonds and foreign currency denominated bonds. He joined National Treasury as a Financial Analyst in 2000.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce [Econometrics] with Honours (University of Johannesburg, 2001), a Bachelor of Commerce (Vista University, 1998), a Diploma in Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management (University of Johannesburg, 2011) and has completed a number of short courses.
